Comparison of standards on the properties of steel for railway rails

Ivan Vitez, Tomislav Hozjan

Abstract

Prescribed properties of rails as specified in UIC 860V Codex and relevant national standards (ASTM, AREA, GOST, BS, JIS, etc.) are compared with the newly proposed European prestandard pr EN 13674-1:1999. More stringent operating requirements and higher speeds call for significant quality improvements. This has resulted in elaboration of the new European prestandard which mainly introduces new testing methods to be implemented in order to achieve greater safety in railway traffic.
